DAVID TLALE - South Africa
Life is an occasion; celebrate it in style, elegance and pure indulgence of a David Tlale Original.Over the five years since he launched his brand, award-winning designer David Tlale has grown from a young designer to a formidable design force, with designs that exceeed all expectations. It is with this understanding that the David Tlale brand developed to be one of the most remarkable fashion labels in South Africa to date.
With that said, it came as no surprise when David Tlale was awarded Fashion Designer of the Year at the recent Arise Africa Fashion Awards, where David Tlale presented a Ready-To-Wear Collection that defied all expectations.
ith this award, David Tlale showcased—for the first time—at the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week in September 2009, courtesy of Arise Magazine. Tlale’s New York collection, which he titled “Cultural Intimacy” was lauded by critics and fashion journalists from New York Post to Women’s Wear Daily, some calling it a "favourite collection of the evening", while others referred to it as “the collection that’s most likely to do well in the New York market.” Closing the David Tlale collection was male supermodel Tyson Beckford.
The year 2008 was a fruitful one for the brand; a year in which Tlale was voted the most stylish person at the annual SA Style Awards, he was also voted Mzansi’s Star Fashion Designer at the Mzansi Star Awards and also nominated at the Mercedes Benz Fashion
Awards 2008, along with many other accolades and nominations.
He was also invited to judge the Elle New Talent 2008 competition, a place where he began his journey in fashion. It was also in 2008 that David Tlale launched his Green Collection for the voluptuous women of Mzansi; a collection that was modeled by South African celebrities and journalists, including the likes of Judith Sephuma, Lebo Mashile, KG Moeketsi and Anele Mdoda. His proud moments of 2008 include designing a showstopper for British supermodel, Jourdan Dunn, which was showcased at Virgin Mobile Cape Town Fashion Week and being chosen to be an ambassador for the Change-4-Ever campaign, which aims to alleviate poverty in Southern Africa.
Both daring and dramatic, David Tlale is a brand that defies convention and a brand that impenitently employs unpredictable use and understanding of fabric, colour and texture. Since his catwalk debut in 2003, David Tlale has enjoyed outstanding exposure on both local and international catwalks, taking the label to astronomic heights. His, is a household label that firmly stands its own ground among a sea of other labels; this being attributed to the sheer design erudition and precision that challenges mediocrity. After winning the Elle New Talent competition and being awarded Best New Designer of the Year by the Sunday Times in 2003, David Tlale has soared to achieve many more accolades. In July 2007, he and three other South African designers were invited to showcase their designs at the Paris Fashion Week, an experience rarely achieved by young designers. Since then, David Tlale has been invited to exhibit his creative talents at other international platforms, including a
May 2008 invitation to showcase in Washington DC as part of the De Beers Shining Light Collection. Those who love the brand also appreciate its avant-garde and rococo elements. It is a brand for go-getters and jet-setters. His designs are often heralded by critics as the most innovative and creative, with bold use of colour and fabric. It is a collection that dared to straddle the sometimes indistinct gender lines. David Tlale‘s commitment to his environment is mirrored in his vision for business and community empowerment. The immediate plan is to become a top couture house in South Africa before taking on a (waiting) global market. Since its inception, the label has received numerous nods from fashion critics and it continues to make its mark as a brand that has a strong sense of style and individuality as its signature.
Amongst his clients, David Tlale counts: Queen LaMbikiza of Swaziland, Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, Juanita Terreblanche (Member of Parliament), Azania Ndoro (METRO FM personality) and many other high profile people.
